Hello, there.

Complete your Core Closet: Black Pants

Complete your Core Closet: Black Pants

If my work as a stylist has taught me anything, it’s this: the reason women have a million clothes and nothing to wear is because they lack a core closet.

The "core closet" is my signature term for ten “must haves” in every woman’s wardrobe. The "must haves" are a wardrobe’s roots and wings. They ground the wild prints, the bold silhouettes and whimsical fabrics, yet stand out on their own with their elegant simplicity.

Every month I’ll feature a core closet piece available at Union & Fifth and style it from head to toe. This month I'm starting with the most important core closet item - the black pant.

Black pants are the single most versatile piece of clothing. They go from day to night, desk to dinner, playroom to boardroom and everywhere in between. With so many silhouettes to choose from, and depending on your finances and physique, I recommend investing in at least 2 pairs, a casual pair you can dress up and a dressier pair you can also dress down. Whether they are leather or lycra, wool or wax coated, black pants are investment pieces worth splurging on. We’ve made it easy for you at Union & Fifth and have curated a collection you can shop right here!

Here are some of my favorite ways to style black pants:

Pair a rocker tee with classic black pants and a structured jacket to make it edgy and fresh, yet sophisticated. Finish the look with stilettos or strappy heels.

Dressing head to toe in black screams effortless sophistication. It’s also the perfect way to showcase a pop of color or print accessory, such as a great bag, scarf or shoe.

Pairing a bold print with black pants allows the print to have the spotlight, as it should, without any competition. It’s guaranteed to make heads turn.

Use black pants to highlight or contrast textures of coordinating pieces to add a different level of sophistication to your look.
