Sustainably Seeking Fall: Finding a Sustainable and Fashion-Forward Approach to Your Fall Outerwear

Fall is such an amazing, if a bit temperamental, season.  Fashion blogs (including us!) write about all of the beautiful things one might wear in the fall for layering – but some locations don’t even get a real fall season to enjoy these fashion tips.  My sister recently sent me photos from her tiny mountain town where they just got two inches of snow!  I was stunned because I’m sitting here at a coffee shop in D.C., enjoying a lovely cup of coffee and the sunny 65° weather.  I grew up in a place where fall was an elusive myth that people from the East Coast talked about with such affection – while I would be gearing up for a long, cold winter.

I never fully understood what all the fuss was about until this last month!  The best thing about fall to me, is the connection to the outdoors that occurs during a transitional season, especially from hot to cold.  The crisp air, crunchy leaves underfoot and the extraordinary change of scenery make one look up and feel connected to nature in a profound way.  That being said – we often feel the effects of the change of season on our skin as it begins to sink in that something around us is changing.  We start to notice the daylight changing and the need to carry a sweater, if we’re up before 8 AM or out past 6:30 PM.

Now I am delighted to bring you more information about these beautiful fall fashions which make much more sense to me now!  I’m dropping in a couple for those of you that don't get to enjoy the luxury of fall so much as moving right into the beginnings of winter.

Over the next month, I’m going to break down the process and sustainability aspects of certain fall fabrics here in the blog.  Next week, we’ll take a look at the #1 fall classic: denim.
